We wanted to let you know that you can access our Patient Education Library with the links on the bottom left side of our website.  Here are some exerts to get you started.

Acne

Acne is a common skin condition affecting our teenage and adult patients. Early treatment of acne is important to prevent the development or worsening of acne scars.

Acne treatment options include prescription-strength medications, including topical retinoids, antibiotics or isotretinoin. Your dermatologist will recommend an acne treatment plan based on several factors, including the severity of acne (mild, moderate or severe), its location, presence of acne scars, and your response to previous acne medications.

Actinic Keratoses

Actinic keratoses (also referred to as “AKs”) are dry, scaly patches that form on sun exposed areas of the skin, such as the scalp, face, and forearms. Actinic keratoses are considered precancerous because they have the potential to become a type of skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma. Your dermatologist will be diligent in diagnosing, treating, and monitoring actinic keratoses. Treatment options include procedures, such as cryotherapy (freezing), and topical medications (5-FU, imiquimod).

Mohs Surgery on Long Island

Mohs Surgery on Long Island

What is Mohs Micrographic Surgery?

Mohs micrographic surgery is a highly specialized, advanced surgical technique that offers the highest possible cure rate for many skin cancers and preserves the greatest amount of normal tissue as possible. If surgical repair of the defect is necessary, it can be done with the knowledge that there is no residual tumor left. As a result, Mohs micrographic surgery is very useful for large tumors, tumors with indistinct borders, tumors near vital functional or cosmetic structures and tumors for which other forms of therapy have failed.

If you have a basal cell carcinoma, there is about a 99% chance that you will be cured.  If you have a squamous cell skin cancer, you can be about 95% certain you will be cured.  However, follow-up visits to detect the rare recurrence are very important. After the initial postoperative period, you will return to your referring physician for routine skin care and tumor surveillance.

What are the benefits of Mohs Surgery?

  • Tissue sparing-least amount of normal tissue taken
  • Highest cure rate of any technique
for Basal Cell or Squamous Cell Carcinomas
  • Lesions completely removed-in only one visit
  • Excellent cosmetic results
  • Less anxiety-no need for re-excision

To help make the visit as pleasant as possible, we provide music, reading material, drinks, and snacks to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

Many patients are confused by the term “Mohs” surgery, and think that it is “Mole surgery” or “Moles Surgery”.  Mohs surgery is named after the man who first developed the technique, Dr. Frederic E. Mohs.

The Colette Coyne Melanoma Awareness Campaign did a wonderful job organizing and promoting the skin cancer screening at the Wantaugh Park/Pool in collaboration with Senator Charles Fuscillo and Nassau County Executive Mangano.  We are thrilled to have been able to contributing to the success of our the screening, working along with doctors from Stony Brook Hospital as well as Dr. Steve Mc Clain from Mc Clain Labs.

A total of 142 patients participated in the free skin cancer screening, and 66 had to be referred for follow up of suspect lesions.

Skin Cancer when caught early is almost 99% treatable, however when not the case, it can be very disfiguring as well as deadly if the diagnosis is melanoma.  This screening  in addition to the two previously held at Jones Beach are life saving initiatives.  Information and UV Bracelets were distributed as well the opportunity to view ones facial damage through our derma scan machine.
