A Safe And Effective Treatment For Head Lice

A Safe And Effective Treatment For Head Lice

It’s summertime, and kids will soon be off to camp! No parent wants to get that phone call saying that their child has head lice. And no parent wants to discover that their child has brought lice home! Head lice are insects and parasites which can be found on a person’s scalp, behind the ears, and near the neckline at the back of the neck. Sometimes head lice are even found on the eyebrows and eyelashes. Head lice are most common in preschool and elementary school children. The egg of a louse is often called a nit. These eggs are very small – about the size of a knot in thread – and they can be very hard to see.

Sometimes they may be mistaken for dandruff or hair spray droplets.  Head lice do not transmit disease, but they are a nuisance. Parents often get upset, or even angry, when they learn their child has head lice. But having head lice is a fairly common problem, and has nothing to do with good hygiene or good parenting. In fact, good health and hygiene habits or a clean house or school have nothing to do with getting head lice.

Contact Dermatitis Testing

Contact Dermatitis Testing

Some rashes are caused by a sensitivity to every day products and items that you come in contact with.  Many patients suffer for years with an itchy rash which may be due to a glue, dye, soap, or moisturizer that they use.  Others have eczema and can not figure out why it flairs.

The way to figure out what ingredients you are sensitive to is with patch testing.  Patch testing is a custom skin test designed to determine whether or not you are allergic to any chemicals contained in commonly used items or products.  We have an extensive number of common and uncommon allergens from which to choose to customize our test according to your needs.  This maximizes the ability to identify the exact substances that you may be allergic to.  We can test substances that scratch tests, typically done by allergists, can not.

In addition we offer a thorough evaluation, examination, and diagnosis as well as information about how to help you avoid allergens in products, toiletries, grooming items, cosmetics, and other items used every day.

Give Your Sunscreen A Caffeine Boost

Give Your Sunscreen A Caffeine Boost

Research suggests that Caffeine kills some skin cancer cells.  According to a study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology this month,  “caffeine could be added to sunscreen to boost protection against the most common form of skin cancer.”  We do not find this surprising.  Infact, we have thought that for a long time.  That is why we offer our patients a sunscreen that has Caffeine as well as potent antioxidants from green tea.  We believe that the best protection you can get is by combining sunscreen, caffeine, and anteoxidants – and that is just what we do in our Anteox Sunscreen.

Warm Heart… Cold Fingers…

Warm Heart... Cold Fingers...

February… the month of Valentines, Love, and cold harsh weather here in NY!

The cold weather can make skin dry, crack, and fingers hurt… and one of the best things you can do to help your skin is to use protective clothing.  Have you ever bought a pair of gloves to find out that your fingers are still cold when you use them?  Well that is not acceptable.

We encourage you to try Glacier Gloves Perfect Curve Neoprene Glove, some of the best out there to keep you warm in a cold demanding winter. These have 2mm neoprene lined with a thin fleece nap, which is comfortable, easy to take on and off, and allows you to maintain your dexterity.  They are waterproof, and have a wrist strap to keep out the cold.

Of course, when you come back inside be sure to use ample hand cream to rehydrate your skin.

Can The Yellow Fever Vaccine Help Prevent Melanoma?

Can The Yellow Fever Vaccine Help Prevent Melanoma?

Scientists have discovered the earlier the vaccine is used, the better. Skin cancer can
take years to develop and the jab works best if given before cells begin to mutate within the skin.

It raises the possibility that the vaccine, which has a better safety record than many
others, could be used in childhood to protect against the disease later in life, providing
further studies support the latest findings.

Malignant melanoma kills around 1,700 people a year and is the third most common
cancer in people aged 15 to 39. Over-exposure to the sun’s rays is the biggest cause and since the mid-1990s there has been a 24 per cent increase in cases in the UK.

Excessive Sweating Holding You Back?

Excessive Sweating Holding You Back?

Want to wear something silky, lacy, white, or tight – but afraid because of excessive sweating?  Botox may be the answer!

Botox is a simple and easy way to significantly decrease your underarm sweating.  Imagine the confidence you would have at work, and in the evening – not having to worry about a sweat stain ruining your shirt.

BOTOX® is FDA approved for excessive underarm sweating that is not adequately managed with topical agents. BOTOX® helps control this condition by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands don’t receive chemical signals, the excessive sweating stops.

The bottom line is that if you have a problem with sweating – you should stop by to talk about this option.  We can help you!

A Trick For Patients With Hair Loss

A Trick For Patients With Hair Loss

We know how stressful hair loss can be.  It is something that we specialize in - both in men and women.  Every patient that comes into our office gets a thorough history, exam, and workup to determine the precise reason for the hair loss.  If you are suffering from hair loss, we strongly encourage you to seek the help of a hair loss expert to “get to the roots” of the problem.

We wanted to share with you a tip that has been helping many of our patients.  One of the medications many of you are using is Rogaine.  We find Rogaine, when used correctly, to be of great value to our patients.  We think that you can make this even more effective if you condition the scalp before applying Rogaine.  By conditioning the scalp – we mean increasing the blood flow.  If the scalp has extra blood flow when you use Rogaine, than we believe more medicine is absorbed and the benefits are enhanced.

So how do you ‘condition’ your scalp?  One of the best ways we have found is with a product called made by by Arbonne.  You can buy this product in our office, or directly from the company.  Here is how to buy it directly from Arbonne:

  1. Signing up with Arbonne here. (Registration is free)
  2. Look for Arbonne Intelligence Thermal Fusion Hair & Scalp Revitalizer

When in the shower, wash your hair, and then apply this conditioner.  Leave the conditioner in your scalp while you clean the rest of your body.  After a few minutes, your scalp will feel warm or tingly.   It may also look slightly red.  Wash out the product, get out of the shower, and apply your Rogaine.  We recommend that you use this conditioner one to two times per week.

Most Melanomas Found By Dermatologist (Not By Patients)

Most melanomas would not be detected without a dermatologist’s total body skin examination, according to a study presented at the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) 34th Annual Meeting.

To us, this study is not a surprise at all – and that is why we encourage ALL of our patients to have a complete skin exam at least every year.  Finding a potential problem early is the best thing that you can do!
