Hairdressers Can Save Lives
This past week, a patient visited my office because their hairdresser found a spot on their ear that they were worried about. Bravo! Recognizing a skin cancer on the ear, scalp, or anywhere else is an opportunity to save a life.
To help improve the awareness of skin cancer, we have been and will continue to distribute to local salons the ABC’s of Skin Cancer, which was put together for us by a talented medical student at SUNY Downstate, Lori Ellis.

A study from the Archives of Dermatology suggests some stylists and barbers are already informally performing these skin cancer exams on clients.
In a survey of 203 Houston-area hair salon workers, 58 percent of respondents told researchers from Harvard’s School of Public Health that they had urged a client at least once to get a mole checked out by a medical professional.
